Hangin' Around
June 18th 2008 12:05
Ah, what a wonderful time it is. I havent really been doing much, just having lazy days where I sit around at the backpackers, reading my books and petting the cats. Already the cats have discovered they are more than welcome in my room and inevitably seem to find their way in there every morning.
Ofcourse, this cant do. I try everyday to go for a walk of some sort. The interesting thing is that this leads me often as not into black areas of town - dont get me wrong, apartheid is over and there is no more segregation of the races, but there is still some areas where only those of darker skin reside.
Whats funny is that everyone gets so creeped out by a white guy walking through - adults stop what they're doing and just stare at me, and children look up at me like fearing that I'll leap on them, bite their necks, and suck all the pigment out of their skin until they're a white person too! what a terrible fate.
On the other hand though, there are many friendly people of all races around, though some a little too friendly. Rarely an evening goes by where I dont make a new friend, and so it is both joyous and sad when new people come in and old people leave. That is the cycle of travelling, I suppose.

Travel agent here. ;o) Great to hear you are having a fantastic time! Just one little thing - you know about the pretty deadly problems in townships and slums in the moment, right? They are not safe at any time but right now they are really not a place to just wonder around and have a look!!! It is not against foreigners but at the wrong place at the wrong time anything can happen.
Otherwise enjoy Capetown!!!
Cheers
Rita
